Toronto, Ontario (City)

Canada is a country in the northern half of North America. The City of Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. It is the fifth-most populous municipality in North America after Mexico City, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area, and is part of a densely-populated region in south-central Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe. Residents of Toronto are called Torontonians.

As Canada's economic hub and a major global city, Toronto has highly developed finance, telecommunications, transportation, media, software production and medical research industries. The city is home to the CN Tower and a majority of the country's corporate head offices. Toronto's population is cosmopolitan, which reflects its role as a major destination for immigrants to Canada. Because of its low crime rates, clean environment and generally high standard of living, Toronto is consistently rated one of the world's most livable cities by the Economist Intelligence Unit and the Mercer Quality of Living Survey.

The name Toronto is likely derived from the Iroquois word tkaronto, meaning place where trees stand in the water. It refers to the northern end of what is now Lake Simcoe, where the Huron had planted tree saplings to corral fish. A portage route from Lake Ontario to Lake Huron running through this point led to widespread use of the name. Toronto covers an area of 629.91 square kilometers, with a maximum north-south distance of 21 kilometres and a maximum east-west distance of 43 kilometers. It is bounded by Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and Highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north and the Rouge River to the east. The city is intersected by two rivers and numerous tributaries namely the Humber River in the west end and the Don River east of downtown.

Toronto is a major international centre for business and finance. Generally considered the financial capital of Canada, Toronto has a high concentration of banks and brokerage firms on Bay Street, the country's equivalent to Wall Street in New York. Toronto is home to a diverse range of public and private educational institutions. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and gain enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace. Toronto enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
