Pickering is a city located directly to the east of Toronto in Durham region in Ontario and Canada. The total area of the city is 231.58 square kilometers. The total population was 87,139 according to 2001 census. The city of Toronto is the largest city in Canada and is the provincial capital of Ontario which is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto area and is part of a densely populated region in south central Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe. The residents of Toronto are called Torontonians. Pickering is well known for the nuclear power plant. There are several manufacturing and high technology firms in the city. The name Pickering is taken from Pickering township, the name of the geographic and political area until the establishment of regional government in 1974. This city has become a centre of industry, education, administration and culture. Recently the city has undergone major improvements. It has become a popular destination for tourism.
