Kitchener, Ontario (City)

Canada is a country in the northern half of North America. It is the 2nd largest country in the world in area, after Russia, and has the longest coastline of any country in the world, being next to the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic Oceans. Canada has the highest mountain range in the whole world. Around 30 million people live in Canada's ten provinces and three territories. Ottawa is the capital of Canada.

The City of Kitchener formerly the City of Berlin from 1854 to 1916 lies in southwestern Ontario, Canada and has a population of 209,000. The metropolitan area, which includes the two neighbouring cities of Waterloo and Cambridge, has 490,000 people, making it the tenth largest city in Canada and now the fourth largest in Ontario by population. The three cities are also known as the tri-cities. The City of Kitchener covers an area of 136.86 square kilometres. In 2004, Kitchener celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Kitchener boasts a wealth of cultural activities. Some cultural highlights include the Open Ears Festival, Multicultural Festival and Blues, Brews and Barbeques, all of which are free to the public. Kitchener is also home to world-class venues such as the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, the Centre in the Square, and theatre and company.

Whereas Waterloo has benefited from the presence of two universities and a number of high tech companies, Kitchener has been a more blue-collar town. The auto-parts manufacturer Budd Canada continues to employ over 1500 workers. The Huron Business Park is also the site of a number of industries, from seat manufacturers to furniture components. Kitchener's downtown core, though somewhat improved in recent years and has experienced considerable urban decay, thanks largely to the decline of industrial jobs in the city and the growth of its suburbs.

There is an interchange with highway 401 on Kitchener's southern border and highways 7 and 8 and the Conestoga Parkway run through the city and connect it to the 401 and to Waterloo. Passenger service is provided by VIA rail. The closest airport to Kitchener is the region of waterloo international airport in nearby Breslau. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
